Attractions and amenities
One of the main reasons people come to live in this famed community is the ocean. San Diego’s coastline is nothing short of spectacular and lends itself well to a wide range of aquatic activities. La Jolla, in particular, boasts some of the best beaches in the Golden State.
- Black’s Beach. This peaceful and secluded beach is ideal for boogie boarding. It also happens to be the first and largest nude beach in the country. Come here if you want an even tan – or even if you prefer to keep your swimsuit on.
- Windansea Beach. This popular destination for outdoor weddings boasts soft sands, crystal clear waters, and numerous alcoves. It’s a well-regarded surfing spot, and dogs are allowed during certain hours.
- La Jolla Shores. Kayaking, snorkeling, and paddle boarding are just some of the water activities to enjoy in this family-oriented beach. You can also fly a kite or play a friendly game of Frisbee.
If you don’t feel like hitting the beach, you can always check out the following attractions:
- Torrey Pines Golf Course. Test your skill at one of two 18-hole golf courses in this public facility. Situated on coastal cliffs that overlook the Pacific Ocean, Torrey Pines hosts a number of important golf tournaments and boasts on-site golf shops, expert instructors, and advanced golf schools.
- Girard Avenue and Prospect Street. Best-of-brand retailers like Gap, Ralph Lauren, and Lululemon can be found here, along with local shops like San Diego Beach Wear and La Scarpa. You’ll also find a number of galleries that showcase contemporary art.
- Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Observe marine life in over 60 habitats during feeding time at the Birch Aquarium. Learn more about the creatures of the sea through fascinating exhibits and shows.
- La Jolla Playhouse. Many of the theater’s productions move to Broadway and receive Tony awards because of their excellence.
There’s no shortage of dining options either. From casual eateries to fine dining restaurants, the community’s gastronomic landscape is diverse and exciting. French, Italian, Mexican, and Thai are just some of the cuisines that can be sampled here.
